My first #WriteHere writing prompt.
As I was doing the research before joining Medium, I noticed there were writing prompts to help get creative juices flowing. In which I thought, “man, these people really want you to write.” So, this post will be my first time participating in #WriteHere.
The writing prompt is — Your next great idea is in the cards, and while reading the “have a hallmark moment” description — in which I would write about a card someone gave me and why I still have it, this moment immediately came to mind.
A few weeks ago, my husband painted our garage floor, and in doing so, he had to move our stuff into the house that was in there. Included in that stuff was a box filled with my mom’s papers, pictures, and things I needed to sort through after her passing. Mind you, her passing was almost six years ago, and I still had not done it. Procrastination at its finest, but also, I was purposely putting it off. If you’d lost a parent, you’d understand.
As I was going through her stuff, I came across this card.
It’s a Mother’s Day card I wrote for her. I have no idea how old I was since I didn’t date it, but it touched me that she kept it.
I grew up with my dad after their divorce, so I only saw her in the summertime when I would visit her in Florida. So, I want to say I was probably six years old.
This made me think that maybe I should keep my daughter’s drawings for me. I usually take pictures of them and throw them out because I’m not too fond of clutter. However, the feeling I got when I found this card is something I would want my daughter to feel. “Wow, she really kept this card.” Something I didn’t even remember doing for her.
It’s beautiful how children show their love and appreciation for the caring adults in their lives.
